Dealers for brands like Ford and Chevy are still sitting on thousands of these old “new” cars.
Car dealerships have a problem. Aside from being a notoriously problematic and greedy business, dealers across the country are still sitting on inventory from one and two models years ago that they haven’t sold yet. It’s a problem for both dealers and automakers alike, especially as 2026 models start to show up on lots. A rough search of new cars using Autotrader yielded over two hundred thousand 2023 and 2024 model year vehicles still sitting on lots across the country. Using Autotrader’s data, I looked at every major automaker and brand to see how many cars 203 and 2024 models were still on sale. While most major brands still have cars sitting on lots, these were the standouts. Keep in mind, while these numbers may not be exact since cars sell daily, these amounts are the ones left for sale as of this writing.
Chevy

Chevy dealers are still sitting on over 16,000 new 2023 and 2024 models. This is a lot, but you also have to look at the context of Chevy’s situation. Keep in mind that up until recently, Chevy had one of the most full model lineups on the market with several car, truck, SUV and, crossover offerings. Chevy also has a ton of dealers, with just over 2,800 in the US; which includes Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. The bulk of the 16,000 or so left on dealer lots are pickups. The Silverado lineup’s – Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 – 6,676 makes up 41 percent of the thousands left on dealer lots. Colorado comes in second with 3,716 left. Chevy dealers still have 2,528 EVs left spread across 951 Blazer EVs, 6 Bolt/Bolt EUVs, 317 Equinox EVs, and 1,254 Silverado EVs.
Dodge

Compared to the hundreds of cars some Stellantis brands still have left on lots, Dodge still has over 4,500 new 2023 and 2024 models left on lots. If you’re still in the market for a good old-fashioned gas-powered Charger or Challenger you’re still in luck for now. Dodge dealers still have 1,616 left. That’s split between 316 Challengers and 1,300 Chargers. Sprinkled in with those old LX platformed Chargers are the new Charger EV with 870 2024 Charger EVs left. Dealers still have a bunch of the Hornet crossover left as well with 1,988 2024s left.
Ford

Ford dealers have a massive amount of 2023 and 2024 inventory left, probably more than any other automaker. The Blue Oval’s 2,847 dealers are still sitting on over 90,000 2023 and 2024 models. Over 41 percent of this number is Ford’s best selling F-Series. Despite Ford constantly touting that the F-Series has been the automaker’s best seller for over 40 years, dealers still have 37,184 from one and two model years ago. This number includes the F-150 and it’s Super Duty variants. The once hot selling Bronco comes in second with 12,715 2023 and 2024s left. Surprisingly Ford’s EVs have done well with just a handful of F-150 Lightnings left, with just 489 2023 and 2024s left. Same goes for the Mustang Mach-E with just 1,026 left. The gas-powered Mustang has similar numbers with 1,108 left over.
Hyundai

Even with record sales, Hyundai dealers still have 4,276 2023 and 2024s left. Looking at individual models, however, you’ll notice that there’s just handfuls left like the Ioniq 5 (236), Sonata (570), and Santa Fe (769).
Jeep

Jeep is another brand with thousands of leftover models sitting on dealer lots. The brand’s recent troubles haven’t helped things either. High prices could be the reason that there’s still 3,579 Grand Cherokee/Ls, 1,187 Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer/Ls and 4,373 Wranglers left. There’s even leftovers of Jeeps recently introduced EV offering the Wagoneer S (205) and a handful of old Cherokees (34).
Lincoln

Despite selling just four models, Lincoln dealers are still sitting on over 5,000 leftover 2023 and 2024 models. Forty percent percent of those leftover models (2,018) are the Navigator and long wheelbase Navigator L, which is wild considering that the all new 2025 Navigator is already at dealerships. The rest are a smattering of Aviators (108) Corsairs (1,394) and the recently redesigned Nautilus. Despite recently receiving a ground up redesign and winning Motor Trend’s SUV of the year, Lincoln dealers still have 1,493 left over.
Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes has 6,843 leftover 2023 and 2024 models sitting at its 385 dealers across the country. Twenty-three percent of those leftover models are its EQ line of EVs (1,577). An even bigger portion of that number are leftover Sprinter commercial vans (2,655). The rest are crumbs of the brand’s usual offerings, like the E-Class (127) and GLE-Class (238). Surprisingly, dealers still have over 400 of the recently introduced CLE-Coupe.
Mitsubishi

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Mitsubishi dealers still have over 4,000 (4,450) leftover 2023 and 2024 models on their lots. What is surprising is that nearly 76 percent (3,380) of those leftover models are the Mirage and Mirage G4, which was discontinued for 2025. The remaining left overs are split between the Outlander Sport (449), Outlander (228), and Eclipse Cross (393).
Nissan

Nissan’s 1,067 dealers have 3,335 leftover 2023 and 2024 models. Leading those numbers is the Z, with 588 left over. The Sentra comes up second with 414 left. The Frontier comes in next at 359.
Ram

Ram is another brand that has far more leftover 2023 and 2024 models than you would expect. Ram’s dealers have 16,946 leftover trucks on their lots. While one might assume that the Ram 1500 makes up the majority of that number, that honor goes to the heavy duty Ram 2500 at 6,311. The Ram 3500 comes in second at 3,897. Ram’s Pro Master cargo van rounds out the top three at 3,469. The Ram 1500? Just 1,151 2023 and 2024s are left with 26 of those being the high performance Ram TRX.
Toyota

Another brand with a full lineup and many dealers, the trusted Japanese automaker has 7,879 leftover 2023 and 2024 models still sitting at its 1,277 dealers. A nice chunk of those leftovers are the Tacoma with a mixture of last and current gen (4,521). The rest are models like Prius/Prime (766), RAV4 (748), Corolla (321) and its variants like the Corolla Cross (168) and GR Corolla (22) and the bZ4X EV (240).
Volkswagen

VW’s 634 dealers still have 3,561 leftover models. Nearly 47 percent of these leftover models are the Tiguan (1,670). The remaining are models like the Atlas (637), Taos (639), and GTI/Golf R (464).
