With a sub-$30,000 starting price and up to 255 miles of range, Chevy’s new Bolt should be a certified hit.

Are we beginning to see a new dawn of affordable EVs? It sure seems that way, first with Nissan’s new Leaf and now with the return of the Chevy Bolt, which has finally been revealed as a 2027 model.

In mid-2023, Chevy announced that the Bolt would be ending production. Many were up in arms over the decision, as GM was getting rid of the relatively affordable Bolt to focus on production of more pricey EVs such as the Silverado and Blazer EVs. Back then, the Bolt was available in the regular Bolt hatchback and the Bolt EUV crossover, which was really just a Bolt hatch on stilts (and was all new for the 2022 model year).

Now after a few years of wondering whether or not the Bolt would return, Chevy is finally doing the market a solid with the new 2027 Bolt. Gone is the regular Bolt hatch; the EUV is now the only Bolt available and is just simply known as Bolt. And from the looks of things, GM won’t be able to make these things fast enough.

First lets start with the specs. GM designed a new drive unit in house for the Bolt, which the automaker says delivers “improved efficiency in cost and energy usage” without much use of rare earth metals, which is a plus. Combined with a new 65-kWh lithium-ion-phosphate (LFP) battery, Chevy says the ‘27 Bolt should deliver 255 miles of range. Charging speeds have vastly improved as well, something the last Bolt seriously struggled with. The Bolt now has peak charging speeds of up 150 kW, which is 2.5 times faster than before. This means with fast charging, the Bolt can go from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes.

The Bolt’s native NACS charging port

Owners won’t have a problem charging away from home either as each Bolt will come with a native NACS charging port.

More importantly, none of this will break the bank either. Including destination charges, the 2027 Bolt will start at just $29,990 for the LT, at least initially. Chevy says an even more affordable 1LT trim will come later with a starting price of $28,995.

That price will get you a well equipped, tech filled EV. Aside from GM’s native Google infotainment system with built in Google Maps, you’ll also be able to use built in entertainment apps when the car is parked, like video streaming apps and games.

All of this is ran on an 11.3-inch touch screen, with another 11-inch display for the driver. The Bolt will also come with vehicle-to-home bidirectional capability, allowing owners to use the Bolt as a generator in an emergency. Chevy has also added a new RS trim for the Bolt, which gets black trim, a unique grille and a rather wild color combo of Atomic Yellow exterior with red accent stitching in the interior. If you’re interested, Chevy says the ‘27 Bolt is scheduled to start arriving at dealerships in January.
